National Cathedral Must Be Completed, Says Minority Leader Afenyo‑Markin

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo‑Markin called on the government to finish Ghana’s National Cathedral during a meeting with the Christian Council, insisting the project is more than a place of worship.

Speaking in Accra, he said the cathedral could boost tourism, enhance the country’s image and act as a rallying point for all Ghanaians, not just the Christian community.

Mr Afenyo‑Markin cited a historic mosque in Turkey that attracts roughly 4,000 visitors daily, arguing a similar landmark could draw tourists to Ghana.

He criticised the government for sending mixed signals about the site’s future use, saying “the government is showing inconsistency. It says one thing today, it says another tomorrow.”

The leader urged a broader stakeholder dialogue to determine the cathedral’s role and ensure it serves the nation’s interests.

Observers will watch how the government responds to the minority party’s appeal and whether plans for the cathedral’s completion are revisited.
