Government teams have re‑deployed to Mallam Junction in Greater Accra, signalling a renewed effort to stem the recurring floods that disrupt traffic, businesses and homes. The move follows earlier initiatives launched from Jubilee House under Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, which brought together ministries, the Weija‑Gbawe Municipal Assembly and private‑sector partners to address landfill, blocked drainage and other environmental factors.

Work began in August with the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces clearing the Lafa water retention basin of solid waste and silt, while plans to build protective embankments were put in place. The Post‑Flood Mitigation Task Force, coordinating the wider exercise, says its goal is to restore waterways and reduce flood impact.

Residents and business owners, including CAITECH, welcome the sustained presence of government personnel and equipment. They argue that a continuous effort—rather than reactive clean‑ups after heavy rain—will tackle the root causes of flooding, such as illegal dumping and encroachment.

The Weija‑Gbawe Municipal Assembly’s role is seen as critical, given its mandate over sanitation enforcement and drainage maintenance. Officials from the Ghana Hydrological Authority note that years of dumping and siltation have severely reduced the Lafa basin’s capacity to channel stormwater.

Stakeholders now call for the momentum to carry on until the landfill, drainage and environmental challenges are fully addressed. A lasting solution, they say, will ease traffic disruptions, protect commercial activity and improve daily life for the community.
