President John Dramani Mahama swore in Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah as Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission on Monday at the Jubilee House. The appointments come after the departure of two former deputy chairpersons, Dr Bossman Eric Asare and Samuel Tettey, who resigned effective July 31, 2026.
During the ceremony, President Mahama urged the new deputy chairpersons to exercise "fairness, restraint, and fidelity to the law." He added, "As president, I expect no preferential treatment from the electoral commission for myself, my party, or my government. I expect an institution that applies the same standards to everyone and protects Ghanaians' right to choose their leaders freely."
Dr Asamoah, a lawyer, chartered accountant and lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, brings more than 17 years of experience in electoral administration, public service, legal practice and academia. Prior to his appointment, he held several EC positions, including Director of Finance, Director of the Training Centre and Head of Audit, and participated in the 2012 and 2016 general elections.
Emelia Afi Agbenyo’s background and qualifications were not detailed in the announcement, but her appointment joins Dr Asamoah in leading the Commission’s efforts to manage Ghana’s electoral processes and prepare for future elections.
The new deputy chairpersons will work under the Commission’s leadership to uphold the integrity of Ghana’s democratic processes, as the EC continues its mandate of overseeing fair and transparent elections.
