Jorge Messi, the father and longtime agent of football superstar Lionel Messi, has died at the age of 68 in Rosario, Argentina.

Jorge passed away after battling a prolonged illness, with reports stating that he had spent his final months receiving medical treatment while surrounded by his family. 

His death was reported on Saturday, August 8, with Argentine club Newell’s Old Boys acknowledging his passing and highlighting his important role in the development of his son’s extraordinary football career. 

A key figure behind Messi’s career

Jorge Messi was far more than Lionel Messi’s father. He served as his son’s representative and played a central role in managing his career from his early years.

He accompanied the young Lionel when the family travelled from Argentina to Barcelona for his trial at the club, helping navigate the early stages of a journey that would eventually make his son one of the greatest footballers in history. 

Jorge subsequently remained closely involved in Messi’s professional career, handling contracts and business affairs while serving as one of his most trusted advisers.

Health concerns during 2026 World Cup

Jorge’s health became a subject of public attention during the 2026 World Cup after reports emerged that he was receiving medical care.

Messi’s family subsequently confirmed that Jorge was dealing with a health issue and criticised what they described as irresponsible speculation about his condition, while asking the media and public to respect the family’s privacy.

Messi also became emotional during the World Cup and later indicated that difficult personal circumstances had contributed to his emotions, although he did not publicly disclose details at the time.

Football world pays tribute

News of Jorge Messi’s death has prompted tributes from across the football world.

The Argentine Football Association announced that a minute of silence would be observed and black armbands worn during matches across Argentine football in his memory. 

Barcelona, Inter Miami, Newell’s Old Boys and other football institutions have also expressed condolences to the Messi family. 

Jorge Messi’s death marks a deeply personal loss for Lionel Messi, whose remarkable football journey was closely intertwined with his father’s guidance and support from his childhood in Rosario through his rise to global stardom.
