Member of Parliament for Hohoe, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, has appealed for urgent support for residents affected by severe flooding in the Hohoe Municipality in the Volta Region. Speaking on the Channel One Newsroom on Monday, September 28, the MP noted that more than 400 homes have been affected by the flooding, with over 3,000 residents displaced and seeking temporary shelter.
The flooding followed heavy rainfall that caused the River Dayi to overflow, affecting several communities around the river, including Zongo, where Mr Tsekpo said more than half of the community has been submerged. The MP said the affected residents have been moved to temporary shelters, including classrooms, while authorities work to find more suitable arrangements for them.
He stressed that the scale of the disaster has overwhelmed the capacity of the Municipal Assembly and local authorities, making support from individuals and organisations necessary. “It’s overwhelming. The MP and the MCE alone cannot, in fact, we are not able to. We are calling for support,” he said.
The MP further commended the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and security agencies for helping evacuate residents from affected homes and prevent loss of lives. He said the situation remains fluid, with floodwaters continuing to rise despite the rainfall having stopped in Hohoe, calling for sustained emergency support as authorities work to protect affected communities.
