The National Housing Fund (NHF) announced that the government will begin constructing social housing projects in 2027 as part of a push to broaden access to affordable homes for Ghanaians.
Chief Executive Officer Prosper Hoetu said preparations are in progress, with work currently focused on designs, discussions with relevant stakeholders and the identification of suitable locations.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, October 12, Hoetu explained that the government is laying the groundwork before deciding how many units to build and other implementation details. He added that the ongoing preparatory work will help ensure the houses are affordable and suited to the needs of the intended beneficiaries, especially households that struggle to access decent accommodation through the conventional housing market.
“Between now and the end of the year, we will be completing designs, discussions, locations and all that before we talk about numbers that we will be building but I can assure you that these houses will be very reasonable and affordable,” Hoetu said. He added that the government will work with stakeholders and local authorities to explore cheaper building technology, noting that the District Housing Programme is piloting compressed earth bricks for climate‑resilient construction.
These steps aim to set a solid foundation for the NHF’s upcoming social housing rollout, with a focus on cost‑effective, climate‑friendly building methods.
