Ghana’s Drug Trafficking Links Deeply Troubling, Lawyer Warns

International corporate lawyer and entrepreneur Victoria Bright told JoyNews’ Newsfile that the rise in drug trafficking cases linked to Ghana is a growing concern that demands immediate attention from national authorities.

Bright said the scale and frequency of recent seizures suggest that Ghana’s involvement in international drug trafficking may extend beyond isolated incidents. She cited 28 drug busts recorded between March 2025 and September 2026, 11 of which involved cocaine, according to a German research analyst.

During that period, about 16 tonnes of Ghana‑linked cocaine were intercepted, with an estimated street value of $1.3 billion to $1.7 billion. Bright noted that Ghana does not produce cocaine, making the figures particularly striking. Seven of the 11 cocaine seizures occurred in Ghana, while four were intercepted abroad, with 3.6 tonnes seized in Ghana and 4.4 tonnes in Europe.

She pointed to various concealment methods, including consignments hidden beneath sand in a cement truck at Cape Coast, inside wood shipments bound for Europe, and in cassava flour. Bright warned that the emerging pattern should compel authorities to investigate the broader networks behind the trade.

“This is something that should command our utmost attention,” Bright said, urging a comprehensive response to curb the growing drug trafficking links involving Ghana.
