Ghana Safer Now Than 2025, Minister Muntaka Says

Interior Minister Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, October 12, 2026, that Ghana is safer today than it was when the government took power in 2025. He highlighted a drop in curfews and improvements in areas once marred by conflict.

Muntaka noted that crime remains a challenge but that security agencies are working to protect the public. "We are doing everything possible to ensure that you can go about your duties without necessarily having to be watching your back," he said.

When asked for figures, the minister cautioned against measuring progress solely through death tolls, arguing that a decline in curfews is a better indicator. He said Ghana began 2025 with about 11 curfews, ended the year with nine, and now has only three remaining.

He cited the Upper East Region’s town of Bawku, which has gone 150 days without gunfire. The curfew there has been eased to 10 p.m.–5 a.m., and residents can now ride motorbikes from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., a practice that had been banned for five years. Muntaka said authorities combined security operations with mediation and peacebuilding to achieve the calm.

Despite these gains, the minister warned that ethnic conflicts, land disputes and illicit drugs continue to pose threats. He also highlighted the challenge of porous borders, noting Ghana has more than 300 unapproved crossing points compared with 48 legitimate ones. "We have to share intelligence and work together with neighbours," he added.

The government’s focus remains on sustaining security gains and addressing remaining challenges through coordinated regional cooperation.
