President John Mahama, in a recent address, highlighted Ghana’s intent to join BRICS, the international grouping of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. He noted that the bloc’s focus on trade facilitation and reducing U.S. dollar dominance offers tangible economic advantages for member states.

Mahama emphasized that Ghana’s pursuit of BRICS membership does not signal a break with Western partners. He pointed out that China maintains strong ties with European nations and that Ghana can engage with multiple global actors simultaneously.

He also referenced the New Development Bank, a BRICS‑run institution that provides favourable financing for infrastructure projects, as a key incentive for Ghana’s potential membership.

The president acknowledged the broader geopolitical shifts, citing the rise of protectionist policies and the U.S. shift toward reciprocal tariffs under President Trump. He framed Ghana’s BRICS bid as a strategic move to diversify its international alliances in a world where U.S. influence is perceived to be waning.

Observers note that Ghana’s alignment with BRICS could enhance its trade prospects and access to development funds, while also positioning the country within a bloc that includes major economic powers such as China and Russia.

Moving forward, Ghana will need to navigate the complex dynamics of the BRICS membership process, balancing its economic ambitions with diplomatic relations across the globe.
