President John Dramani Mahama today outlined Ghana’s “Accra Reset” strategy at the Health Plenary of the Alamein Africa Forum in Egypt. The plan aims to broaden the National Health Insurance Scheme, introduce Free Primary Health Care and establish the Ghana Medical Trust Fund to strengthen local health‑product manufacturing.
He said the government is also empowering the Food and Drugs Authority and the National Vaccine Institute to shift Ghana from a consumer to a producer of medicines, vaccines and other health products. The move is intended to secure Ghana’s place in regional health value chains and reduce reliance on imports.
Mahama argued that stronger domestic production would retain foreign exchange, support industrial development and build resilience against international supply disruptions. He highlighted Egypt’s Hepatitis C programme and Nigeria’s African Medical Centre of Excellence as continental models for building self‑sustaining health ecosystems.
"We do not need to look outside our continent for proof that this works," Mahama said, stressing the importance of African initiatives in retaining health‑related skills and resources.
