Ghana’s Ambassador to Hungary, Dr Kwame Ampofo, urged the country to diversify its energy mix at the launch of the 10th Ghana Energy Awards in Accra on Tuesday.
Speaking to a packed audience, the ambassador said Ghana must build adequate reserve capacity and expand investment in solar, nuclear and thermal power to ensure a stable electricity supply.
He cited Hungary’s experience, where drought‑induced water shortages threatened the cooling of nuclear plants, as proof that even advanced energy systems are vulnerable to unexpected disruptions.
Dr Ampofo also expressed confidence in Ghana’s prospects for nuclear power, noting that the country already has trained experts capable of supporting a future nuclear programme.
The awards, which opened nominations on September 30 and will close on October 30, recognise individuals, companies and institutions that have made significant contributions to the energy sector.
Event Director and CEO of Energy Media Group, Ing. Henry Teinor, said the awards will continue to be merit‑based and will use an integrated management system to enhance transparency and efficiency.
Nominees will undergo virtual and physical verification after nominations close, with site visits to validate claims.
The main ceremony will take place at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra in November under the theme “A Decade of Redefining Excellence.”
