Jurgen Klopp’s Germany were held to a goalless draw by Greece in Thessaloniki, a result that extends the German coach’s mixed start to one win from four matches.
Klopp made three changes from the 1-0 defeat in Augsburg, yet the hosts dominated possession and created 21 shots, with no goal to show for the effort.
Greece opened the scoring chances early when Jonas Urbig was denied a clear header by Fotis Ioannidis, but the match remained one‑way traffic for most of the night.
Jonathan Burkhardt appeared to have given Germany the lead in the first half, only for a VAR review to spot a handball by Tom Bischof in the build‑up, cancelling the goal.
Both sides had opportunities: Lennart Karl, Derry Scherhant and others for Germany, and Konstantinos Mavropanos, Giorgos Masouras for Greece, but neither side converted.
German captain Florian Wirtz admitted the frustration after the game: “We built up quite a bit of pressure but didn’t get that goal. That’s frustrating. Overall, we can be satisfied with how we played. There were a lot of positives. We must not forget that we have only been together for a week. We really wanted the win, but not everything is bad now.”
The stalemate leaves Germany three points behind Greece, who remain unbeaten and sit second in Group A2, level on eight points with the Netherlands. Klopp’s new tenure now records one win from four appearances.
