The United States Defence Department has announced that former Army Major Nidal Hasan, convicted for the 2009 Fort Hood massacre, will be executed by firing squad on 3 December. The event will be livestreamed, according to Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, who said the public must witness the consequences of such crimes.
Hegseth told the BBC that the execution would be “public” and that the decision was approved by President Donald Trump, with Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirming the recommendation. The execution will take place at Fort Hood, Texas, the first firing squad execution in the U.S. military in more than six decades.
Hasan, a psychiatrist from Virginia, admitted in court to the killings that claimed 13 unarmed soldiers and has apologized for his actions. The 2009 attack remains the deadliest non‑combat incident on an American base.
The White House has been asked for comment on the livestream, and the Pentagon has stated that the public will be able to watch the execution. The event is expected to draw international attention to the U.S. military justice system.
