The Senior Staff Union (SSU) and Junior Staff Union (JSU) of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have announced a nationwide demonstration to oppose the proposed Private Sector Participation (PSP) arrangement in the company. The peaceful protest is scheduled for Tuesday, September 29, 2026, and will run from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. across all ECG operational regions.
In Accra, workers will gather at the forecourt of the Trades Union Congress (TUC); in Kumasi, the ECG Regional Office at the Airport Roundabout will serve as the assembly point. Other regions will convene at their respective ECG offices. The unions will later communicate specific routes for the demonstrations.
Following the march, participants will return to their assembly points for a briefing before dispersing. The unions have directed that the petition be presented to regional ministers, who will forward it to President John Dramani Mahama. The action is part of a broader campaign launched earlier this month, which also includes the continued wearing of red armbands by union members.
Committees will be formed at both national and regional levels to organise and coordinate the protest. The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU), acting as convener, has formally notified the Inspector General of Police of its intent to hold the demonstration under Section 1(2) of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491).
