Dr Joseph Kweku Asamoah has taken office as the Electoral Commission’s Deputy Chairperson, pledging to serve Ghana with integrity, professionalism and a wealth of experience. He made the declaration on Eyewitness News on Monday, October 12, 2026.
As a former elections consultant, lawyer, chartered accountant and economist, Dr Asamoah said he intends to apply his multidisciplinary background to the Commission’s work. “I bring to bear a lot of experience as a consultant in elections, as a lawyer, as a chartered accountant, and as an economist,” he explained.
He outlined plans to pursue electoral reforms in partnership with political parties, the media, EC staff and other stakeholders, stressing the need for broad engagement. “In the coming days, together with the Commission, it is my objective and the objective of my colleague and the newly appointed Deputy Chair to make sure that we will actually enrol on the aggressive reforms that will actually make sure that everybody is on board,” he said.
Dr Asamoah added that the Commission will work with all critical stakeholders to strengthen its capacity to meet public expectations and fulfil its mandate in accordance with the law. The comments come amid scrutiny of EC appointments and questions about the body’s independence.
He described his appointment as a call to national service, saying, “I think it’s a good moment at this point in time, and it’s a call to duty, and we are willing to serve.” He will work alongside the Commission’s leadership to oversee electoral administration and advance reforms aimed at improving operations and stakeholder engagement.
