Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, has been distributing trunks stocked with school essentials to JHS graduates in his constituency ahead of their transition to senior high school.
In a post on Instagram, Dumelo said he had spent the past three days handing out trunks, mattresses, gari, sugar, cutlasses and sanitary pads for girls, among other items, to what he called his "beloved JHS students from Ayawaso West" who are set to begin SHS. He said the exercise would continue through the week. "For the past 3 days I have been distributing trunks, mattresses, gari, sugar, cutlasses, pad (for Girls) etc to my beloved JHS students from Ayawaso West who are going to SHS. More distribution continues this week," he wrote, alongside his familiar #idey4u hashtag.
Images shared with the post showed rows of black trunks packed with the various items, including mosquito nets and other personal effects, laid out for distribution.
The gesture is the latest in a series of personal welfare initiatives Dumelo has rolled out for constituents since becoming MP, ranging from donations of food items to school feeding caterers to free fuel for taxi drivers and free viewing centres during the World Cup. It follows the familiar back-to-school pattern of trunk and provisions donations that many Ghanaian MPs and benefactors carry out ahead of the academic year, aimed at easing the financial burden on families as their children transition into boarding school.
The post drew a wave of appreciation from constituents and social media users in the comments section, with many thanking the MP for the gesture and wishing him well.
