On Thursday, 1 October 2026, Blue Medics served as the official health provider for the United Nations International Day of Older Persons commemoration in Akuapem North. The ceremony, hosted at the Grace Presbyterian Church Auditorium in Akropong Akuapem, was organised by the University of Ghana’s Centre for Ageing Studies (CFAS) in partnership with the office of Member of Parliament Samuel Awuku.

Sponsored by the MP’s office, the event carried the theme “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives” and the slogan “Growing Old! Growing Bold!”. Blue Medics offered a range of services, including medical examinations, health education talks and the distribution of wheelchairs to several attendees. One 101‑year‑old constituent received a wheelchair donated by Mr Awuku, underscoring the practical support the programme aimed to deliver.

Convener Daniel Appiah highlighted the importance of looking beyond merely extending life expectancy. He urged that longevity should be paired with quality of life, dignity and preventive care throughout all life stages. “Healthy ageing requires attention to people’s wellbeing throughout the different stages of life,” Appiah said, echoing the United Nations’ call for governments, civil society and the private sector to transform extra years into healthy, productive and equitable ones.

Mr Awuku spoke after the programme, stressing the need for younger generations to honour and care for older citizens. “How we want to be honoured in our later stages in life, we need to honour this same older generation,” he remarked. The MP’s office used the event to showcase medical care, talks, wheelchairs and other basic needs, while encouraging society to treat older persons with respect, courtesy, love and affection.

The collaboration between the MP’s office, CFAS and Blue Medics combined social support, ageing research and healthcare, aligning with the UN observance and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection’s data that Ghana’s population aged 60 and above is projected to reach 5.7 million by 2050. The initiative reflects Blue Medics’ commitment to keeping health at the centre of ageing discussions.

Looking ahead, Blue Medics plans to expand its advocacy and service delivery, aiming to strengthen healthcare, social protection and care systems for Ghana’s growing older population. The Akuapem North commemoration serves as a model for integrating preventive care and community support in the pursuit of healthy longevity across the country.
