The 2025 Credit Reporting report released by the Bank of Ghana revealed that banks accounted for 86.28% of all credit enquiries that year, solidifying their position as the dominant users of the credit referencing system. This share represents a continuation of a trend that has persisted over the past several years.
According to the report, the rise in mobile money loans and payroll lending is the primary factor behind the steady increase in credit enquiries. Microfinance and microcredit institutions, meanwhile, saw a slight dip, recording 8.47% of total enquiries in 2025 compared to 8.82% in 2024. Searches by savings and loan companies and other financial entities also fell relative to the previous year.
The breakdown of enquiry types shows that credit applications and credit bureau searches made up 87.21% and 10% of total enquiries respectively, while loan recoveries accounted for the remaining 3%. Notably, the use of credit bureau services for credit monitoring purposes by financial institutions surged by 199.71% year‑on‑year, a jump attributed to the growth in mobile money and payroll lending.
All licensed credit bureaus were actively involved in selling credit reports and related services to financial institutions during 2025, receiving the same volume and type of data as required by the Bank of Ghana’s submission guidelines. The report also detailed how enquiries were distributed among the three licensed credit bureaus, highlighting each bureau’s role in meeting lenders’ needs.
Prepared in accordance with Section 58 of the Credit Reporting Act, 2007 (Act 726), the document offers a comprehensive overview of key developments in the Credit Reporting System, statistical trends in credit enquiries, data submissions, and the performance of credit bureaus, financial institutions and Designated Data Providers for the year.
