On Tuesday, Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Mahama Ayariga unveiled a new initiative aimed at deepening the relationship between Ghana’s banking sector and the communities they serve. The proposal calls for selected streets to be renamed and subsequently adopted by banks for maintenance and beautification.
Speaking to a gathering of bank heads, Ayariga said the move would transform public spaces into living reminders of the cooperation between financial institutions and society. He explained that when a bank adopts a street, it is not merely cleaning a road; it is investing in the dignity of our people and the pride of our communities.
“It should not be seen as an additional burden on banks but as a partnership between the banking sector and government,” the minister added. He assured the heads of banks that his ministry would work with them to establish a fair, transparent and sustainable framework for the initiative.
The plan is part of a broader vision to build a more cooperative society where institutions and citizens jointly contribute to national development. The next steps will involve selecting streets for renaming and drafting the partnership agreements.
