Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa, Sulemana Braimah, said the arrest and investigation of Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah could create the impression that the case is a display of state power.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Braimah expressed deep disappointment if the allegations against the MP ultimately prove to be mere rhetoric, suggesting that the situation might be used to “show where power lies.”
He questioned the circumstances of the MP’s arrest, noting that EOCO had reportedly invited him since February yet failed to secure his attendance. Braimah pointed out that Baffour Awuah had appeared several times on Newsfile and visited EOCO in his capacity as a lawyer representing clients, yet investigators did not alert him during those encounters that he was wanted for questioning.
According to Braimah, arresting the MP at court premises while he was representing a client could further fuel perceptions of a power play. He urged authorities to handle the case fairly, ensuring that the public sees the process driven by law and evidence rather than a political demonstration.
He added that investigations into alleged wrongdoing should not be opposed, but must be conducted with accountability for any crimes committed against the state.
