The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested Michael Ayitey Okai, alias "Ayitey Powers," a 46-year-old former professional boxer, in connection with an alleged threat of death made against Yaw Ampofo, Director-General of the National Sports Authority, on August 24, 2026.
In a press statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the police said the arrest followed a video circulating on social media in which the suspect is alleged to have issued the threat.
The statement said Ayitey Okai is currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
The Accra Regional Police Command assured the public that investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat and to take appropriate action in accordance with the law. It further urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information concerning the matter while investigations continue.
