On Monday, September 5, Minister for Roads and Highways Kwame Agbodza announced a GH¢20,000 donation to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Care, as part of a ceremony that unveiled a commemorative plaque at the Ministry. The contribution is aimed at bolstering efforts to combat breast cancer and to provide medical care for patients in need.
The donation was made during the unveiling of a sculpture that commemorates the Ministry’s role in the fight against breast cancer, a key activity of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Agbodza explained that the funding is part of the Ministry’s broader commitment to supporting the disease’s prevention and treatment.
Speaking at the event, Agbodza said his support for the Ghana Medical Trust Fund was informed by a personal experience involving his sister.
"A few months ago, when President Mahama was launching the Ghana Medical Trust Fund in the Volta Region, I donated three months of my salary to the fund. Perhaps today you know why I did that. I did that there for my sister,"he added. He further highlighted that the Ministry would continue to promote breast cancer screening and a workplace culture that prioritises health and wellness.
During the ceremony, Agbodza unveiled a commemorative plaque that symbolises the Ministry’s dedication to the fight against breast cancer. He urged Ministry staff to take screening seriously and to encourage early detection, medical consultation and support for those undergoing treatment. He stressed that awareness must go beyond wearing pink and should focus on proactive health measures.
The GH¢20,000 donation joins Agbodza’s personal contribution to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, which he has pledged in support of his sister’s health needs. The Ministry’s initiative aims to strengthen the national response to breast cancer and to ensure that patients receive the necessary medical care and support.
As the country continues to champion Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Ministry of Roads and Highways’ contribution underscores the importance of government involvement in public health initiatives. The donation is expected to enhance the fund’s capacity to provide treatment and support services to patients across Ghana.
