Ghana Water Limited (GWL) began a controlled spillage from the Weija Dam on Tuesday, September 8, a full day before the originally planned start date of Wednesday, September 9. The move followed a significant rise in water levels upstream, prompting the agency to open one gate early to avoid a larger, potentially flood‑prone release later.

Greater Accra Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation, Dennis Nartey Adjannor, explained that the decision was precautionary. "Instead of anticipating opening the spillage tomorrow, they experienced a high level of water from Nsawam Dam, and so it has necessitated them to open it today," he said. Adjannor added that the early release was intended to prevent a full‑blast discharge that could increase downstream flooding risks.

Data from the dam at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday showed the water level at 13.78 metres (45.2 feet), with Gate #2 opened to six inches (0.15 metres). GWL may open additional gates if the water level rises further. Communities likely to be affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kopey and surrounding areas.

GWL’s Chief Manager and Head of Public Relations, Stanley Martey, warned residents in unauthorized riverbank areas to evacuate, cautioning that the dam could collapse and wipe out properties if they remain. He urged compliance with official directives to prevent a repeat of recent flooding devastation.

Adjannor said NADMO is coordinating with district assemblies, traditional authorities and resident associations to prepare communities for potential impacts. The extent and duration of the spillage will depend on the volume of water flowing into the dam, and GWL will provide further updates as the situation evolves.
