A catastrophic collision on Walewale Road in the West Mamprusi District on Sunday, October 18, left two people feared dead and twelve others injured, some critically, after an articulated cement truck, a Toyota Voxy and a number of motorbikes were involved.

Witnesses say the truck, travelling from Walewale, allegedly lost control and slammed into the Voxy, which was heading from Bolgatanga to Tamale. The impact also reportedly struck nearby electricity poles, adding to the chaos.

Several motorbike riders were caught up in the wreckage, with some reportedly crushed during the incident. The deceased are said to include a female student and a motorbike rider.

Emergency services rushed the injured to Tamale Teaching Hospital and other nearby facilities. Twelve people are reportedly in critical condition at the emergency ward, with several others suffering serious injuries.

Mohammed Jabaah, the Municipal Chief Executive for West Mamprusi, confirmed the toll. “Two people died and twelve others sustained injuries,” he said. He added that it was the Toyota Voxy that lost control, causing the accident involving several vehicles.

“There was a collision between the articulated truck, which was carrying POP cement, and the Toyota Voxy. The Voxy lost control, resulting in the accident, involving several vehicles. Two people died and eight were injured,” he said.

Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the truck’s loss of control. Residents in the area are calling for better road safety measures and clearer signage on Walewale Road.

As the investigation continues, the local health authorities are monitoring the condition of the injured, with updates expected as more information becomes available.
