At about noon on Wednesday, strong winds swept through Accra’s Airport Residential Area, causing portions of the new Villaggio apartment building to detach and tumble from the upper floors. The incident sent construction materials and building fragments crashing onto the streets below, sparking panic among residents and passers‑by.
Eyewitnesses reported that the wind gusts, which preceded the city’s afternoon rainfall, were intense enough to break structural components of the under‑construction complex. The building, still in the early stages of development, had not yet been sealed or fully stabilized.
Local authorities and the project’s contractors have yet to confirm whether anyone was injured or if any property was damaged. No official statements have been released at this time.
The incident highlights the risks associated with large construction projects in Accra’s rapidly expanding urban areas, especially during the region’s windy and rainy seasons. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
