The University of Ghana branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG‑UG) has expressed optimism that members’ book and research allowances will be credited to their accounts by Friday, October 23. The hopeful outlook follows the resolution of technical issues on the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS).
UTAG‑UG had warned that it would strike if the Controller and Accountant‑General’s Department did not release the funds. The delay, according to the association, began when a strike by members of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) halted the processing of necessary documents by university officers.
Subsequent technical setbacks—linked to changes in the Ministry of Finance’s system access arrangements—further postponed the release. Jerry Joe Harrison, UTAG‑UG President, told reporters that the University of Ghana has now completed the required processing and validation of documents on the GIFMIS platform, and the association is awaiting the final release of funds by the Controller and Accountant‑General’s Department.
Members of the association have been waiting for months, and the potential strike was a stark reminder of the financial pressures on university staff. The resolution of the GIFMIS glitches and the upcoming payment are expected to ease tensions and restore confidence in the university’s payroll system.
UTAG‑UG will monitor the situation closely and is prepared to mobilise its members if the payments are not made by the promised date. The association’s leadership has urged the government to ensure that such technical disruptions do not recur, emphasizing the importance of reliable financial management for academic staff welfare.
