UG Sets October 19 Return Date for Students After GAUA Strike

The University of Ghana (UG) has scheduled Monday, 19 October 2026, for students to report to campus and their respective halls of residence after the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) suspended its nationwide strike.

Through its Business and Executive Committee, the university revised its arrangements for the 2026/2027 academic year, responding to disruptions caused by the industrial action that had affected preparations for the reopening of public universities.

Under the new plan, students are expected to report to campus on 19 October, while a live random allocation of beds will take place on Friday, 16 October, allowing students to secure accommodation. Freshers’ orientation will run from 21 to 23 October, and lectures for the first semester are slated to begin on Monday, 26 October.

UG has urged students to pay the required fees and complete their registration through its online platforms before the commencement of academic activities, aiming to facilitate a smooth return to campus and resume preparations for the new academic year.

GAUA suspended its strike on Friday, 16 October, after engagements with the Ministry of Education and assurances that its outstanding concerns would be addressed. Members of the association have been directed to resume work on Monday, 19 October. The industrial action had been launched over concerns about disparities in revised market premiums and related allowances between teaching and non‑teaching senior staff at public universities.
