Two Dead After Galamsey Pit Collapses at Sefwi Datano

In the Bodi District of the Western North Region, a galamsey pit collapsed on two miners, Kwaku Charles and Nana Dibi, killing them on the spot. The victims were believed to be in their early thirties and had been digging for gold at a site where they routinely worked. A third person was reportedly with them, but he remains unaccounted for after the incident.

Community members and residents rushed to the scene, joining police and local leaders in a rescue operation that included an excavator. The machine’s use led to the severance of one victim’s head before their bodies were recovered. The remains were subsequently transported to the Juaboso Government Hospital mortuary for preservation.

Datano Unit Committee member Joseph Debrah confirmed the tragedy to Adom News, saying he received a distress call that two people had been trapped in the pit. He alerted community leaders, who mobilised youth volunteers, and the police in Bodi were also informed and joined the effort. Further investigations will seek to establish the circumstances surrounding the collapse.

The incident has cast a pall of grief over the Sefwi Datano community and has reignited concerns about the dangers of illegal small‑scale mining in the region.
