President Donald Trump announced on his Truth Social platform that he has suspended a number of U.S. sanctions on Russia, stating the decision is intended to keep Moscow at the bargaining table and advance peace negotiations in the war between Russia and Ukraine.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, "I am in the process of negotiating Peace in the war between Russia and Ukraine," adding that he did not want to "do anything that will drive, foolishly, Russia away from the bargaining table." He also remarked that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky does not want to end the war, suggesting that a better deal could have been made two years ago.
The sanctions were blocked Friday night, two days before they were scheduled to take effect, as tensions between Kyiv and Moscow deepened. Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev called the order an "important and truly historic moment," warning that the sanctions, passed by Congress and signed into law in September, would have inflicted serious damage on the U.S. and global markets.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the pause as a 60‑day period during which the potential impact on the U.S. and global economies will be analyzed. Trump’s decision comes after Washington and Kyiv strained relations over a controversial U.S. deal to import Russian diesel last week, a move that Ukraine’s leadership criticized as supporting Russia’s war effort.

Despite the sanctions, Russia continues to export oil, primarily to China and India. The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air reports that China has taken about half of Russia’s crude exports, with India accounting for roughly 37%. Ukraine and its European allies have voiced concerns that the diesel deal could undermine stringent sanctions aimed at limiting Russia’s war funding.
Trump has denied accusations that he is deliberately siding with Russia, including claims that U.S. officials slowed Starlink satellite speeds used by Ukraine. He has also denied stopping the sharing of defense intelligence with Kyiv.
As the U.S. and Ukraine navigate this complex diplomatic landscape, observers watch closely how the temporary suspension of sanctions will affect the broader geopolitical dynamics of the conflict.
