Members of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) have issued a two week ultimatum for government to address their grievances, effective Thursday, August 14, or they will take matters into their own hands.
The union is demanding equal and fair treatment of its members across the education sector, calling for fairness in promotion, remuneration, annual leave, healthcare, general welfare, professional development and access to opportunities.
"By this statement, we are serving two weeks' notice, effective today, August 14, 2026, on the various stakeholders (the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Education, Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, university managements, Ghana Education Service Management etc.) to address our concerns accordingly. Failure to address the above issues will compel members of TEWU to advise themselves accordingly," the Deputy General Secretary of TEWU of TUC, Gifty Abena Turkson, said at a press conference in Accra on Friday, August 14.
She said one of the union's key demands is the prompt payment of all outstanding overtime allowances owed to watchmen and security personnel within the Ghana Education Service, arrears she said have accumulated over the years.
Turkson said that category of staff works tirelessly on weekends and public holidays to keep educational institutions running, often at the expense of their own social lives, yet has not been properly compensated for the sacrifice. "We demand the immediate payment of all accrued overtime arrears to the affected personnel without further delay," she said.
She added that TEWU of TUC is also calling for ranks to be decoupled from positions, and for non-teaching staff to be promoted to their respective ranks without hindrance.
