Communications Minister Announces 2,800‑Site Telecom Expansion in Volta Region

During a two‑day working visit to the Volta Region, Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George announced a 2,800‑site telecommunications expansion programme that will see 800 new cell sites constructed and 2,000 existing ones upgraded across the country within the year. The minister made the declaration while meeting Paramount Chief Togbega Drake Tsigbe IV at Akoefe Kpodzi in the Ho Central Constituency and inspecting a newly built Rural Telephony Project (RTP) facility at Akoefe Gadza.

George highlighted that the 2,800‑site initiative represents a significant leap in Ghana’s telecom infrastructure compared with developments over the past five years. The plan will involve new towers and upgrades to existing facilities operated by major mobile network operators such as MTN and Telecel.

The minister also disclosed that the additional network spectrum released over the last two years has already exceeded the total allocation during the preceding two decades. This extra spectrum is expected to provide the radio‑frequency capacity needed to transmit calls and data, supporting faster internet speeds and better network performance.

Expressing confidence in the project’s impact, George praised traditional leaders and community members for supporting engineers working on telecommunications projects across the region. He noted that their advocacy, alongside that of Members of Parliament, had helped prioritise underserved communities. The Ningo‑Prampram MP added that relevant ministries were coordinating cable deployment with road construction projects to minimise service disruptions caused by fibre‑optic cable cuts.

As the new facilities become operational towards the end of the year and into early next year, residents in underserved areas are expected to benefit from more reliable mobile services and greater access to digital services. The minister concluded that the investments would deliver improved network coverage and performance across Ghana.
