Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, died on Monday at 08:00 local time while receiving treatment at the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar. Officials confirmed that he had been battling a heart condition prior to his death.
Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi delivered the official notification of the passing, extending condolences to the president, his family and friends. Funeral arrangements are currently progressing in Kizimkazi, a coastal village on the semi‑autonomous island of Zanzibar.
Hassan spent most of his career as an agricultural academic and kept a low public profile after his wife assumed the presidency in 2021 following the death of former leader John Magufuli. The couple married in 1978 and have four children – three sons and a daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who serves as a member of Zanzibar’s House of Representatives.
Regional heads of state quickly offered condolences. Kenyan President William Ruto posted a message of sorrow, noting that “President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania a distinguished son.” Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema and Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye also sent formal messages of sympathy, underscoring regional solidarity during this difficult time.
As national mourning unfolds, the private grief of the first family is joined by public displays of cross‑border solidarity, highlighting the shared cultural values of communal support across East Africa.
