Somoco Ghana Limited, the sole authorised distributor of Bajaj Automobiles in Ghana, announced the launch of its “Safe Journey” 2026 Road Safety Campaign on Tuesday. The initiative is a joint effort with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), the Ministry of Transport and the Ghana Police Service, and is slated to run until December 2026.
Focusing on motorcycle and tricycle users, the campaign will roll out rider education, safety awareness, training and licensing support, and a push for helmets and protective gear. The programme also aims to embed safer road‑use habits into the customer journey from showroom to street.
Managing Director Nii Ayi Hyde told the launch that Somoco’s role as a major mobility provider extends beyond supplying vehicles. “Road safety must form part of the entire customer journey,” he said, adding the company is committed to building a culture where mobility and safety go hand in hand. Hyde highlighted practical interventions such as rider training, licensing assistance, safety education at the point of sale and promotion of helmets.
Somoco’s Head of Marketing Jerry Aye said the goal was to make safer choices easier for riders and to encourage lasting safety habits beyond the campaign’s duration. The company also donated a new Bajaj Boxer 125 HD motorcycle to the NRSA to support its road‑safety activities.
Director‑General of the NRSA, Abraham Amabila, praised Somoco for taking the lead and described the campaign as a key strategic road‑safety education effort. He urged other corporate organisations to join the national effort to reduce road crashes. Minister of Transport Joseph Bukari Nikpe highlighted the need for a regulatory framework for commercial motorcycle operations, commonly known as Okada, and stressed the importance of legalising such services.
A key component of the campaign is the DVLA‑certified Somoco Riding Academy, which will provide rider training and licensing support, particularly for commercial riders. The launch was attended by officials from the NRSA, DVLA, Ministry of Transport, Ghana Police Service, transport operators, riders, ride‑hailing partners and media representatives.
The Safe Journey 2026 campaign will continue across Ghana until December, with activities centred on rider education, safety awareness, training, licensing support, donations and the promotion of responsible road‑user behaviour.
