The 2002 cohort of the St Mary’s Old Girls Association (SMOGA) will stage a fundraising production of I Do, I Don’t, a play by Ghanaian playwright Uncle Ebo Whyte, at the National Theatre in Accra on Saturday, October 17.
Organised in partnership with Roverman Productions and Joy FM, the initiative seeks to raise funds to refurbish the science laboratory at St Mary’s Senior High School. The project is part of the year group’s efforts to give back to their alma mater by supporting improvements that can enhance students’ learning and practical skills in science.
Through the production, SMOGA hopes to bring together theatre lovers, former students, families and corporate supporters to contribute to the school’s development while enjoying a live theatrical performance.
At the centre of I Do, I Don’t is Abena Ackon, a woman caught between competing demands from different parts of her life. Her boss wants answers, her colleagues pile on the pressure, her husband expects the impossible, and her mother‑in‑law adds to her troubles. Even the pastor’s prayers appear to complicate matters rather than offer relief.
The play explores the pressures of work, marriage and family relationships, and the struggle to maintain one’s identity amid the expectations of others. With its focus on everyday dilemmas and human relationships, the production offers audiences an opportunity to reflect on the challenges that arise when personal desires clash with social and family expectations.
The play will be staged twice on Saturday, October 17, with performances scheduled for 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the National Theatre in Accra. Tickets cost GH¢250 and can be purchased by dialing *365*536# or at Kay’s Haven, Dzorwulu; Tema Community 11 Shell; Doue Designs, Dansoman; Effan Victory Clinic, Spintex Road; and Artiste Alliance Gallery on La Beach Road, opposite the La Traditional Council.
SMOGA and Roverman hope the evening’s drama will not only entertain but also deliver a tangible boost to the school’s science facilities, ensuring future generations of students have the resources they need to thrive.
