Haruna Iddrisu Calls for Transparent, Equitable SHS Placement System

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has urged the government to overhaul Ghana’s senior high school (SHS) placement system, demanding greater transparency and fairness as the country expands access to secondary education.

Speaking at the 64th CHASS Conference in Ho, Iddrisu highlighted deficiencies uncovered in the Free Senior High School programme, noting that inadequate infrastructure will struggle to accommodate the increasing number of students entering the second cycle.

He called on stakeholders to submit recommendations that would improve the placement process and ensure students receive fair opportunities to attend their preferred schools. The minister stressed that a new arrangement must balance equity with the rising demand for SHS places.

Iddrisu also flagged infrastructure development as a critical priority, arguing that expanding access must be matched with adequate facilities to support teaching and learning. He said the government is committed to addressing the sector’s challenges, with President John Dramani Mahama providing the political leadership needed to improve educational opportunities for Ghanaians.

Further, the minister urged those who pledged support for the education sector to honour their commitments, stressing that additional resources will be necessary to strengthen infrastructure and delivery of secondary education.

Ghana’s education ministry is now reviewing the challenges linked to expanding secondary education access, with a focus on making the placement system more transparent, equitable and responsive to the country’s growing student population.
