Selena Gomez said she can’t change the way her voice sounds after vaping nicotine, according to a candid Instagram post shared Sunday.

In the video, the singer explained, “I vaped nicotine a lot.” She added that the habit was not worth the cost, calling it “stupid” and noting that it had changed her voice. She laughed, saying, “So if you guys don’t like listening to my voice, that’s totally understandable. I don’t mind. Just don’t listen to it.”

Gomez, who has lupus, has long linked her vocal changes to the autoimmune disease. In a December Instagram Q&A she said, “Sometimes things happen. I get weird. My throat kind of swells inside sometimes. That’s all.” Lupus flare‑ups can inflame the larynx, producing a raspy, strained tone similar to a cold.

She also noted that her voice has deepened with age, a normal shift, but fans have closely tracked the evolution of her speaking style on YouTube.

In the same video, Gomez said she had recently quit vaping and was excited to keep it off. “It’s really hard, but I know if you are going through something you can get through it too. It sucks,” she said.

Medical reports increasingly link vaping to breathing problems, wheezing, coughing, dental issues, poor sleep, mental health problems and eye symptoms. While nicotine is addictive, it can help some quit smoking, according to the NHS.

After revealing her lupus diagnosis in 2015, Gomez has undergone chemotherapy, a kidney transplant from friend Francia Raisa in 2017, and a flare‑up in 2020. Some fans questioned her nicotine use given her kidney history, but many praised her honesty about addiction.

Gomez’s openness serves as a reminder that quitting nicotine can be harder than it appears. Fans continue to support her efforts to stay vape‑free.
