The Sekondi Prisons Complex hosted a two‑day Ghanaian Sign Language (GhSL) training programme for officers from Ekuasi Camp Prison, Sekondi Central Prison and Sekondi Female Prison. The initiative aims to enhance communication with hearing‑impaired inmates and promote inclusiveness within the correctional system.
The programme was facilitated by a teacher from the Sekondi School for the Deaf, who introduced participants to the fundamentals of GhSL and basic conversational skills. Officers engaged in practical sessions, learning and demonstrating various signs and expressions to strengthen their ability to communicate effectively with people who have hearing impairments.
During the training, the facilitator emphasized the importance of sign language in fostering effective communication and inclusivity, noting that certificates would be presented to participants at the conclusion of the programme. Participants reported that the training equipped them with practical skills that would help them better communicate with inmates and other hearing‑impaired persons encountered in the course of their duties.
This effort is part of a broader strategy to build a more inclusive and responsive correctional environment, ensuring that communication barriers do not prevent persons with disabilities from accessing appropriate services and support.
Following the programme, the prison complex plans to integrate sign language training into ongoing professional development for its staff, with the hope of creating a more supportive environment for all inmates.
