President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Luanda, Angola, to join fellow African heads of state and government at the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union, a summit built around strengthening the continent's conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms.
Yesterday's high-level session was led by Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, who doubles as the AU Champion for Peace and Reconciliation in Africa, with the primary agenda centred on considering and adopting a comprehensive Decision, Action Plan and Implementation Matrix on Conflict Prevention and Resolution for the continent.
African leaders used the gathering to take stock of existing continental peace and security frameworks, working toward concrete measures to sharpen coordination, responsiveness, implementation and financing across both the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) and the African Governance Architecture (AGA).
The summit unfolded against a backdrop of complex and mounting security challenges spanning Sudan, Eastern DRC, the Sahel region, the Horn of Africa and Mozambique, with President Mahama and his counterparts expected to forge actionable strategies to bolster regional stability and reinforce the continent's collective capacity for peacebuilding.
