Police Arrest Two After Intercepting Vehicle with Cigarettes and Suspected Cyanide

The Bono East Regional Police Command arrested Fusini Danaa and a companion after intercepting a Kia Rhino (registration UE 819-26) on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, near Jema. The vehicle was traveling from Nalerigu to Kumasi when police, acting on intelligence from the Regional Police Intelligence Directorate and the Police Intelligence Directorate Headquarters in Accra, stopped the vehicle and conducted a search.

Inside the vehicle, officers found 321 boxes of foreign cigarettes, including Royals, Oris and Gold Seal brands, as well as 23 bags of soya beans, 39 bags of groundnut husks, 21 bags of millet and 100 containers of suspected sodium cyanide. The consignment was reportedly handed to the driver at Bentri near Nalerigu for delivery to a customer in Kumasi.

Both the driver and his mate are in custody and are assisting investigations. The Environmental Protection Agency and the Ghana Standards Authority have taken samples of the suspected cyanide for laboratory analysis, citing concerns over its transport alongside food items.

Police say the vehicle and its contents have been secured while they continue to identify and arrest others involved in the consignment.
