Paul Afoko, the National Chairperson hopeful for the New Patriotic Party, has dismissed recent opinion polls that track the party’s chairmanship contest, insisting that the only credible measure of support will come from the delegates’ vote on October 3 in Kumasi.
Afoko’s remarks followed a Global InfoAnalytics survey released on 20 August 2026, which placed former NPP General Secretary John Boadu in the lead with 27% of the respondents’ preference, followed by former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko at 15% and Afoko himself at 10%.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of a thanksgiving service for newly elected Ashanti Regional Executives at Gracefields Chapel in the Nhyiaeso Constituency, Afoko said his interactions with delegates had bolstered his confidence in his campaign.
“I don’t believe in any polls. The only poll I believe in is the October 3 poll here in Kumasi,” he said. “All other polls are just speculation. And as they say, you can’t enter into a person’s mind and know whether they are telling you the truth or not.”
Afoko added that he believes his message is gaining traction among delegates in the areas he has visited, but remains skeptical about surveys purporting to capture voters’ preferences. He stressed that the upcoming delegate vote will be the definitive test of support for the party’s leadership.
Observers note that the October 3 vote will be a decisive moment for the NPP, with delegates from across the party’s national structure expected to cast their ballots. The outcome will determine whether Afoko can overcome the early lead shown by Boadu and Agyarko and secure the chairmanship.
As the party prepares for the vote, delegates and supporters will be watching closely to see if Afoko’s confidence translates into a majority on the day of the election.
