On Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah Kofi‑Buah officially launched the Jimi Land Reclamation and River Watercourse Rehabilitation Project at Tasliman in the Adansi Asokwa District of the Ashanti Region.
The flagship pilot aims to restore 153 hectares of land upstream of the Jimi Dam and rehabilitate the degraded Jimi River watercourse, a vital source of drinking water for the Adanse Traditional Area that has suffered severe environmental damage from illegal small‑scale gold mining, or galamsey.

During the launch, the pair inspected the Jimi Dam, briefed on the extent of land damage, and led a symbolic tree‑planting exercise alongside AngloGold Ashanti’s Managing Director Samuel Boakye Pobee. The Ashanti Green Initiative is spearheading the project, working with AngloGold Ashanti to provide technical and operational support through its Obuasi Mine.

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, headed by Emmanuel Armah‑Kofi Buah, and the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, led by Mahama Ayariga, are playing instrumental roles in driving the campaign against environmental degradation across the country.
Minister Kofi‑Buah pledged his commitment to expand the initiative nationwide, urging other regions to replicate the model to improve Ghana’s greening and restore degraded lands.
