The Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei confirmed that she has not yet received a formal summons from the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) regarding a preliminary investigation into an alleged GH¢70,000 payment tied to Parliament’s vetting of ministerial and Supreme Court nominees. Speaking on JoyFM’s Top Story, Mrs Appiagyei said she would only confirm her cooperation after receiving an official invitation from the OSP.
“I have not been contacted by the OSP, and I can only confirm it when I have a formal invitation from the OSP to appear before him,” she told the station. When asked whether she would attend if formally summoned, she replied, “Why not? It’s a state institution. I cannot do otherwise.”
The OSP announced on Friday, September 4, that it had begun preliminary investigations following questions about the source and purpose of the alleged funds. The office cited a purported memorandum attributed to Mrs Appiagyei that raised concerns over the payment’s legitimacy and its connection to the Parliament’s Appointments Committee.
In its statement, the OSP said it had invited Mrs Appiagyei to appear before the office to assist with its inquiries and that the investigation would seek to determine whether the document is genuine and clarify the source and intended purpose of the alleged GH¢70,000. The agency also noted it was actively probing allegations of extortion involving Members of Parliament.
The investigation is expected to establish the veracity of the memorandum and the nature of the alleged payment. The Deputy Minority Leader’s willingness to cooperate underscores the seriousness of the inquiry into possible financial irregularities within Parliament’s vetting process.
