On 3 September 2026, former Vice President and NPP presidential hopeful Dr Mahamudu Bawumia met the national executives of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) in Accra. He highlighted the critical role nurses and midwives play in delivering quality care across the country.
Meeting Highlights
During the session, Bawumia underscored that without nurses and midwives, Ghana would have no functioning healthcare system. He described them as the first point of contact, the last line of defence, and the heart of care delivery.
GRNMA leaders used the occasion to raise concerns over several pressing issues: the need for improved nursing education and continuous professional development, infrastructure gaps in health facilities, and stronger leadership and management within the sector. They also called for lasting solutions to recurring industrial actions and for innovative measures to enhance the welfare, motivation and working conditions of health workers.
Proposed Solutions
- Clearer career progression pathways for nurses and midwives
- Improved conditions of service and better recognition of sacrifices made by health workers
Bawumia described the engagement as "fruitful and enlightening" and praised the executives for their forthrightness and practical insights. "What I have heard today is invaluable," he said, adding that he would work with the association to build a modern, well‑managed healthcare system that values its workers and delivers for the Ghanaian people.
The meeting is part of a series of stakeholder consultations that Bawumia is conducting ahead of the 2028 elections, engaging with professional bodies, youth groups, business leaders and civil society organisations.
