George Kwabena Abankwah‑Yeboah, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) first vice‑chairman aspirant, warned that the party must first rebuild trust among its base before it can mount a credible challenge to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 elections. He made the remarks on Eyewitness News on Thursday, September 3, 2026.
Abankwah‑Yeboah said the NPP’s loss in the 2024 presidential election exposed deep dissatisfaction among sections of its supporters. He estimated that roughly two million party members who did not vote in 2024 did so mainly because of internal party concerns rather than economic conditions. “The 2 million of our people who did not show up to vote were not based on the economy,” he told the programme.
The former NPP National Treasurer explained that many supporters were unhappy with decisions taken by the party, which eroded confidence in its leadership. He stressed that the ongoing reorganisation must focus on restoring confidence and bringing disaffected members back into the fold. “We have continued to do so by reorganising the party and getting leadership in place, because all is based on trust,” he added.
Abankwah‑Yeboah maintained that the NPP could resolve its internal difficulties if its new leadership was prepared to listen to members, involve them in decision‑making and provide credible leadership. “Yes, we can fix ourselves,” he said. He also flagged concerns over the party’s relationship with the business community as another issue requiring attention.
Looking ahead, the NPP’s leadership will need to demonstrate tangible changes to regain the faith of its supporters. The party’s performance in the next election will hinge on whether it can translate these internal reforms into a united front capable of challenging the NDC’s hold on power.
