Nigerian police rescued 11 Ghanaians who were allegedly held hostage in Sagamu, Ogun State, after paying GH¢40,000 each to a fellow Ghanaian who promised to facilitate their travel to Canada and Spain.

The victims, made up of seven males and four females, were rescued by operatives of the Ogun State Police Command’s Anti‑Kidnapping Unit following intelligence received on October 19, 2026.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the officers acted swiftly on the information to locate the hideout and rescue all 11 victims.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the victims were allegedly deceived into travelling to Nigeria by a fellow Ghanaian who promised to arrange their visas for overseas travel.

Each victim reportedly paid GH¢40,000 before being taken to Nigeria and held against their will.

The police said the victims were receiving appropriate care and support, while detectives continued investigations to identify and arrest others suspected of being involved in the alleged criminal network.

The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended the Anti‑Kidnapping Unit for its prompt response and professionalism.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives, tackling transnational crime and preventing Ogun State from becoming a safe haven for criminals who exploit unsuspecting people.

The command has urged the public to verify overseas travel and visa‑processing arrangements before making payments and to report suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.

It also pledged to continue intelligence‑led operations and collaborate with other agencies to dismantle criminal networks and bring those responsible to justice.
