On Wednesday, September 2, Chief Nana Osei Yaw Frimpong II of Nhyiaeso, a suburb of Kumasi, met with the management of the Ashanti West Region at the regional office in Adum to pledge support for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in protecting utility corridors from encroachment. The chief assured ECG that any illegal occupation of land earmarked for poles or transformers would be reported to his office and dealt with promptly.
He highlighted the critical role of electricity for households and businesses, noting that “electricity has become a necessity for every household, and without electricity, businesses and, to a larger extent, the economy will collapse.” He commended ECG’s improved service delivery in areas such as Ahodwo, parts of Adum, Darkodwom, Danyame, Ridge, KATH, Ridge Condos and surrounding districts.
Ing. George Amoah, ECG’s General Manager for Ashanti West Region, welcomed the chief’s assurance and promised further collaboration. He explained that encroachments on right‑of‑way lands cause costly relocations and that the chief’s support would help curb this menace. Amoah also noted recent upgrades, including new 500 kVA transformers at the Ridge Bulk Supply Point and a project to install two additional transformers in the Adum Central Business District to meet growing demand.
ECG warned against illegal connections and power theft, stressing the need to safeguard resources to improve supply across the greater Kumasi and Ashanti regions. The chief’s visit strengthened ties between ECG and traditional authorities, aiming to ensure reliable electricity for the community.
