Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh told the Ministry of Health’s Sector Update Engagement in Accra on Wednesday, October 7, that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) now covers roughly 70 % of the population, up from 57 % less than two years earlier.
The minister said the increase is partly due to the government’s decision to uncap the National Health Insurance Levy, which boosted the scheme’s funding from about GH¢6.5 billion in 2024 to GH¢9.8 billion in 2025.
He also disclosed that payments to healthcare providers have been raised by an average of 50 % to improve service delivery, aiming to reduce delays in claims payments and broaden access to care.
Akandoh highlighted that the policy changes are intended to strengthen the scheme’s capacity to meet growing demand and improve overall health outcomes for Ghanaians.
