Two new 15‑bed Mother and Child Health Units have been commissioned at Volo and Fodzoku Health Centres in North Tongu, Volta Region, to improve maternal and child healthcare access.
How the Project Came to Life
The units were established by Engage Now Africa‑Ghana in partnership with the Ghana Health Service (GHS). The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter‑Day Saints fully funded the project.
Impact on the Community
Designed to serve more than 19,000 people in the two communities and surrounding areas, the facilities offer spaces for childbirth and newborn care. Residents no longer need to travel long distances for essential services.

Cecilia Amankwah, Country Director of Engage Now Africa‑Ghana, said, “Safe and appropriate environments for childbirth are not a luxury but a basic requirement for dignified, quality maternal care.” She added that investments in maternal health infrastructure must translate into safer deliveries, healthier mothers and newborns, and improved outcomes for families.
What Happens Next
The units will operate under the Ghana Health Service and are expected to strengthen maternal and child healthcare in a region where access has been limited. Health workers will begin offering services immediately, with ongoing monitoring to ensure quality and safety.
