Property, housing and infrastructure worth at least $2.56 billion were damaged in Nepal’s catastrophic floods last week, the country’s disaster authority chief told Reuters on Friday.
According to Dharma Raj Upreti, chief of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, the estimated cost of early recovery in the first four months to build roads, temporary shelters and provide drinking water and electricity would be around $52.6 million (7.95 billion Nepalese rupees).
Upreti said the government is prioritising the restoration of essential services and the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure to minimise the long‑term impact on communities across the country.
Officials are coordinating with international partners to secure the necessary funds and technical assistance, while local authorities are mobilising volunteer groups to support the most vulnerable villages.
The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition will oversee the electrification of temporary shelters, and the Ministry of Finance is reviewing budget allocations to cover the projected recovery costs.
As Nepal works to rebuild, the focus remains on strengthening flood resilience and ensuring that future disasters do not cause similar economic losses.
