Evelyn Nattey, the aspiring Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress in Afadzato South, unveiled ERA Bakery on Thursday, handing over hot ovens and other equipment to a group of women in Kolenu. The move is part of the party’s effort to encourage female participation in politics and to stimulate economic growth in the Volta Region.
During the ceremony, Nattey explained that ERA Bakery is a locally owned venture that will offer modern, quality baking services to residents of Afadzato South and beyond. She said the bakery’s name, meaning “a New Era,” reflects a fresh start for the community, bringing new jobs and opportunities for women and youth.
"Today is a very special day for us at ERA Bakery. Today, we are not just commissioning or unveiling new ovens; we are presenting new hope, new jobs and a new future for Afadzato South," Nattey told the gathered crowd. She added that the bakery would provide fresh bread, birthday cakes, meat pies and doughnuts, eliminating the need for locals to travel to Ho for baked goods.
Three main objectives were highlighted: delivering quality, fresh and affordable baked products; creating employment, especially for women and young people; and empowering women to reduce poverty in the district. Nattey emphasized that when a woman is empowered, the whole community benefits.

On sustainability, she said the bakery will source raw materials from local farmers, offer regular training for staff, uphold high hygiene standards, and use energy‑efficient ovens and eco‑friendly packaging. She urged residents, churches, schools, shops and event organisers to patronise ERA Bakery, noting that over 80 per cent of its workers are local women.
Assembly Member Mr. Edem Delka welcomed the initiative, stating that the support would help beneficiaries start their own businesses and provide for their families. The beneficiaries pledged to engage actively in community development and political activities in the district.
With the launch of ERA Bakery, Nattey hopes to create a self‑sustaining model that circulates money within the local economy, supports traders and delivers preservative‑free baked goods daily. The event marked a new chapter for Afadzato South, blending entrepreneurial spirit with political empowerment.
